SFSC Nurses Honored at Pinning Ceremony

On July 28, South Florida State College graduated a class of 24 practical nurses in a traditional pinning ceremony in the Wildstein Center for the Performing Arts at SFSC’s Highlands campus in Avon Park.

Half Cent Sales Tax Meetings Set

As the Aug. 30 primary election nears, a citizens group that is promoting a half-cent sales referendum, Referendum 5, to raise money for school infrastructure is going to hold two informational meetings for the public.

The Better Schools for a Better Community committee plans to meet on Monday, Aug. 15 at Avon Park Middle School, and Monday, Aug. 22 at Sebring Middle School, both at 5:30 p.m. A meeting was held in Lake Placid on May 23.

ESOL Coordinator at SFSC Was Once an ESOL Student Herself

Since 2013, Sandra Pinzon has served as the coordinator of the English for Speakers of other Languages program at South Florida State College. She credits her own career success to learning English in an ESOL classroom after she arrived in the United States.

“I studied English in a university classroom in Honduras,” Pinzon said. “It wasn’t the kind of English I needed to get ahead in the workforce.”

Grand Opening of Goodwill Announced

A grand opening celebration for the new Goodwill superstore, next to Winn-Dixie in Sebring Square Mall, 420 Sebring Square, is set for Aug. 20 and 21.

There will be hourly drawings for Goodwill gift cards throughout the weekend. Doughnuts will be served to early bird shoppers on Saturday. Store hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

This is the 10th new store Goodwill Industries-Suncoast Inc. has opened in West Central Florida since 2001.

Heartland Cultural Alliance Offers Children's Drawing Classes

The Peter Powell Roberts Museum of Art & Cultural Center in Avon Park is offering a children’s drawing class by international award-winning artist Beverly Marshall. The classes will be 1-2:30 p.m. The five-week class will be held on consecutive Saturdays, starting Saturday through Sept. 10.

Childrens's Museum May Re-Open By the End of the Year

People involved with the Children’s Museum of the Highlands hope to reopen the facility by the end of the year.

The museum has been closed most of this year because of structural problems, including a partially collapsed section of the roof.

Jessica Hartline, president of the board of directors, said a plan for the repair work is being developed. She hopes the plan will be completed during the next several weeks, leading to the beginning of the construction.

Florida Hospital medical procedure transmitted live to doctor's symposium

As Dr. Thomas Shimshak performed procedures to relieve vascular blockages in two patients at Florida Hospital Heartland Medical Center on Wednesday afternoon, more than 1,000 physicians viewed through a live satellite video transmission.

Florida Hospital in Sebring was selected as one of only five medical centers in the United States to perform live case transmissions for the 12th annual C3 Global Cardiovascular Symposium in Orlando. The C3 stands for complex cardiovascular catheter.
