Half Cent Sales Tax Meetings Set
As the Aug. 30 primary election nears, a citizens group that is promoting a half-cent sales referendum, Referendum 5, to raise money for school infrastructure is going to hold two informational meetings for the public.
The Better Schools for a Better Community committee plans to meet on Monday, Aug. 15 at Avon Park Middle School, and Monday, Aug. 22 at Sebring Middle School, both at 5:30 p.m. A meeting was held in Lake Placid on May 23.
“As kids return to school this month, the need for capital improvements at our school campuses is more apparent than ever,” said committee Chairman John Shoop. “We want to invite the public to the schools so they can see the issues firsthand.”
The group is comprised of Highlands County citizens who represent the county’s three cities in sectors such as: community, parent/non parent, education, finance, agriculture and retail.
The committee volunteers its time to support the half-cent sales tax referendum, which will help fund safety and security improvements, new buses, repair and maintenance, new construction, reconstruction and renovation of existing school facilities and technology upgrades.
